El Handbook es una bibliografía sobre América Latina que incluye libros y artículos seleccionados y reseñados por especialistas. Publicado por la División Hispánica de la Biblioteca del Congreso de los Estados Unidos, se dedica, alternadamente, un año a Ciencias Sociales y el siguiente a Humanidades. Cada año, más de 130 especialistas de todo el mundo seleccionan alrededor de 5,000 trabajos para inclusión en el Handbook. Publicado en forma continuada desde 1936, se ha constituido en una guía bibliográfica esencial para los latinoamericanistas. Se puede encontrar más información sobre la historia del Handbook en una ponencia escrita (en inglés) para el Congreso del Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) en 1996. Con la aparición del HLAS Online, el Handbook está ahora disponible en tres formatos: los tradicionales volúmenes impresos, actualmente publicados por University of Texas Press, el CD-ROM que produjo y mantiene al día anualmente la Fundación Histórica TAVERA, de Madrid, España; y la presente versión para Internet. El HLAS Online, actualizado frecuentemente, proporciona acceso rápido y completo a los volúmenes ya publicados del Handbook, a los que se encuentran en preparación y a los materiales listos para incluirse en números futuros.

Annotation: Expansion of commercial agriculture, both for export (sugar) and domestic consumption (rice), in coastal valleys of Lambayeque simultaneously led to strengthening of domestic regional market, with growing interchange with serrano hinterland. In contrast to Trujillo, growth of sugar estates did not hinder, but rather fostered, the centrality and business volume of Chiclayo as commercial hub. Enganche of serrano peasants became necessary to supply growing labor needs of sugar estates, as small coastal farmers maintained their independence throughout early 20th century. Valuable statistical information on railroad tonnage, urban social and income structure, distribution of landholding and occupation in the countryside.

Annotation: The rise of modern capitalist sugar plantations on the north coast led to the integration of three distinct regional spaces, linking coastal valleys with a highland hinterland. The major cause for the rise of these spaces was the labor shortage on the coast and the development of labor recruitment (i.e., enganche) in the highlands. Authors stress regional differences between spaces created around the valleys of Jequetepeque, Chicama and Santa Catalina, and the Lambayeque and Zaña valleys.
